Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. 2018
Council: 15791 - FALMOUTH
Last weekend my wife and I were invited to attend the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Each year several members of our Parish and council attend the chrism mass at the Cathedral. This year many Deacons and Priests participated during this mass along with one of our Fourth Degree Members who is with the Honor Guard. By far for me, this is one of the most beautiful and meaningful masses of the Lenten season. I am in hopes to see more of our council brothers and their families attend next season. During the Mass, the bishop blessed the oil of the sick and the oil of the catechumens, and he consecrated the sacred chrism. The oil of the sick is used to anoint the sick, bringing God’s health, strength, and forgiveness to those in need. The oil of the catechumens is blessed to strengthen those preparing for baptism to avoid sin and to grow in faith. The sacred chrism is used for baptism, confirmation, ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars and churches. At the end of the Mass, the oils were distributed to representatives from parishes, a hospital, and a healthcare facility, representing all the parishes and many ministries of the Diocese of Portland. Many of the Priests from around the Diocese of Portland who were in attendance renewed their commitment to priestly service during the Mass. God is truly good in all he does.
