Italian Supper to benefit ABBA Women's Resource Center in Portland Maine

The ABBA Women’s Resource Center in Portland Maine provides support and council services to women in need, especially those finding themselves pregnant. A faith based program, ABBA works to help these women with resources to handle their pregnancy and medical needs. ABBA works to find alternatives to abortion and has an outstanding 90% rate of success, including their ultrasound services. As a result of this fund raising effort, our Council was able to donate $500 to ABBA.
The efforts for this fund raiser began a month before the event when several Brother Knights took the lead on publicity – sending announcements to local papers about the event, posting the event on the parish sign, printing and stuffing flyers into the parish bulletin, announcing the event at parish masses, and encouraging parishioners to attend post mass on the day of the event. One Brother Knight took the lead to order and purchase the haddock from the Harbor Fish Market. Another took the lead to purchase the remaining food and supplies needed for the event. Another Brother Knight and his spouse took the lead on making the meat balls while another Brother Knight and Spouse made the home made pasta sauce. Another Brother Knight made and donated the traditional Italian Antipasto. Multiple Brother Knights and spouses made or bought over 150 desert servings.
On the morning of the event, June 6 2019, ten Brother Knights and one Spouse arrived early to set up the parish hall, move the movable walls, set up tables and chairs, put out table cloths, place mats, centerpieces, salt/pepper, napkins, pre-wash the knives/forks/spoons and plates, set up the coffee pots. The Spouse put the finishing touches on the pasta sauce and stayed around all day to prepare and cook the full meal. The meal consisted of traditional Italian antipasto, homemade meatballs, homemade marinara sauce, pasta, Italian bread, butter, coffee/tea/punch/water and the very popular homemade desert buffet. Over 85 meals were served and many in the hall enjoyed seconds. A representative from ABBA was on hand to give a brief presentation about ABBA services. After the meal, Brother Knights and family members helped wash the dishes, clean off the tables, put away the tables and chairs, and return the hall to its standard format.
