Virtual Walk for Life 9/19 to 9/26/2020

02/27/2021

Council: 12941 - BIDDEFORD

Project Description:

Our council had to rewrite plans for our annual Walk for Life in order to work around Covid 19 this year, so we made the event virtual. We solicited anyone we could reach via church bulletins, signage and word of mouth to donate toward the Culture of Life and appealed to all to walk separately or in a group, at the place and time of their choosing, all in support of human life in all its stages. The result was a Virtual Walk that far surpassed all our previous walks.
We were happy to have even more walkers for this virtual event than ever before. Participants were fanned out across Biddeford, Saco and even Kennebunk and covered three miles or so distance, mostly over city streets. Walking was a fine way to enjoy a low stress outing of friends and family, all for a noble cause.
We were uncertain how well our fund raising would pan out since everyone was Covid bound. It turned out there was no need to worry. The council collected donations from over a hundred individuals and local businesses, also more than ever before. The total donations amounted to $7500, more than double last year’s.
St Joseph Council 12941 has so far donated $5000 of these proceeds to Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center in Sanford toward their ultrasound operating expenses. We sent an additional $500 each to two different facilities run by the Good Shepherd Sisters in Maine. The first is Esther Residence in Saco, a recovery place where women released from prison or recovering from addiction can readjust to normal life in the community at large. The other is Courage Lives, a similar operation in central Maine where victims of sex trafficking can recover from that life of abuse. The council has earmarked another $1000 to be disbursed to Alpha PRC this spring. Additionally we intend to donate $500 to Vitae Society Maine toward the cost of their distributing Pro-Life messages on the internet and making 30 second Pro-Life ad spots to run on television stations throughout the state.
