Life Activities

July 15, 2021 by Dan LaLonde

Life Activities:
Andy Levesque attended the Maine State Annual Convention. He distributed baby packets, brochures, pamphlets, and other useful literature. The Knights are collecting money (to place in a line account) in order to support Mr. Levesque.

The Silver Rose program was well attended at the Maine State Convention on May 22nd at 6:30 am.  “The Silver Rose is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners, and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

Maine Right to Life will be sending us this year’s raffle tickets. Let us know how many tickets your councils will need. We are in short supply this year. Order now supplies may run out.

Ultrasound Program

  • Three Pregnancy Support Centers in Aroostook Country are awaiting ultrasounds. It was recommended that the centers be blessed by a priest (this is also a great idea for all of our sites)
  • Funding needed (urgent!!!): Pat Bonney (from Open Arms Pregnancy Center in Augusta) needs funding. One council is working to fundraise in June, please join their efforts.

First ever Men’s March against abortion in DC District of Columbia

Hundreds gather for first ever Men’s March against abortion in DC District of Columbia | June 15, 2021

The first ever national Men’s March, organized by Fr. Stephen Imbarrato and Catholic radio host Jim Havens, took place last Saturday, on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Men were dressed in suits while clerics wore their cassocks. A tweet showing Michael Hichborn, president of the faithfully Catholic Lepanto Institute, and his son praying the rosary together has been widely shared on social media.

Beginning at 11 a.m., the men gathered for prayer at Washington Surgi-Clinic, a late-term abortion facility. The abortionist at this clinic, Dr. Cesare Santangelo, was caught on tape in 2013 agreeing to deny medical care to a viable child who survives an abortion. The men then proceeded to march to the White House.

In a conversation with LifeSiteNews, event organizer Jim Havens warned young men who are considering taking their wives or girlfriends to an abortion clinic not to fall into the lie of abortion.”

“The truth is, this child is already here; this child is already infinitely valuable, as [are] you, as is that mom,” he continued. Tell her that you’re going to be there to support her, to support that child and step up as a man.”

Fr. Stephen Imbarrato counseled, “Every abortion wounds a woman, and a man is involved in every single abortion, so I think the abortion industry, the culture of death, wants to marginalize men and tell men, ‘It’s not any of your business.’”

He compared the men of today to Adam, who blamed Eve after eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. “Men need to stand up, and stand up for women, try to protect women from being wounded and of course protect the most vulnerable, our babies,” he continued…..

Leviticus 18

21 “Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.

28 And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you”.

29 “Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people”.

30 “Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.”

Precious Innocents

July 14, 2021 by Dan LaLonde

Precious Innocents is a nonprofit organization within the state of Maine that is working to pass legislation (An Act to Provide Dignity for the Fetal Remains by Requiring Their Interment or Cremation; LD 1225). Sadly the Bill was defeated by a vote of 8-2. In order for this bill to pass in the future, it looks like we will need no less than two acres of land (per cemetery) donated to Precious Innocence in order to ensure we can provide 8’X4’ burial plots. In addition, details of each cemetery’s layout will need to be formulated and proposed. Senator Scott Cyrway is in the process of revising the bill so it can be reconsidered (to include the land and burial plot layouts). Please donate to this vital organization. Please contact Lee or Bobbie at 207-951-0537 or 207-943-3710 or contact Carla Caren, Aline Poulin, Judy Icenogle and Jan Raymond

Precious Innocents received their 2nd bi-annual donation from Faith Evangelical. The installment totaled $750.00 and was directed towards the operations of this valuable ministry.  Below is Pastor Brent’s response from Faith Evangelical:

“Thank you for this update and reaching out. I admit I have not been able to keep as close of an eye on this effort as I would like given our two year transition/COVID challenges. I assure you though, we are very much behind your ministry and appreciate the fight that you have so consistently and compassionately engaged in. What you do is critical in the movement and has such value.

Blessings to you and the whole team, Brent”

(Please consider donating to this important/vital ministry).

Life Winner A-New program idea and a baked bean supper

One of our council members came up with a new concept to help promote life.  We formed a committee to discuss this exciting new idea. After thoughtful prayer and lots of brainstorming, our council came up with a logo, prayer cards and a pin. We even trade marked the logo!

In order to raise funds to make these items a reality we held a drive through baked bean supper. 150 hours with 10 knights and 2 wives we raised $1426.00 to kick start this program.

This new project is called I SURVIVED NINE and highlights the peril some unborn children are in.  With the monies earned this  program is off to a great start! We hope to get the I SURVIVED NINE important message out to the public.

Bobbie and I are pleased to announce the Division A winner this year is 10019-Lewiston.

Life Winner A—March around the Church

Because of the COVID pandemic restrictions, we could not attend the Rally in Washington or Augusta, so we took matters into our own hands!

With permission from our pastor, 20 Knights and 30 community members, walked around our church, many with posters. Some participants stayed in their cars to show their support. We gave out carnations to all who participated and placed 48 carnations at the memorial to unborn children. Our church bell rung 48 times to commemorate the years since abortion was legalized.

Bobbie and I are pleased to announce the Division A winner this year is 13861-Sanford.

Life Winner B—Right to Life-40 days for Life

60 people peacefully prayed in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic in our service area for forty days from September 26 through October 31, 2020. Five knights and 60 persons total participated in this event.

By praying in public we made people going to the clinic aware of other options to abortion. We hope that our public show of support for life and our prayers made a difference to the patients entering the clinic.

Bobbie and I are pleased to announce that the Division B winner this year is council 10221-Gorham

Life Winner B -Council and parish Novena for life

Because of COVID restrictions our council decided to hold the Novena for Life Rosary both online and privately in our homes

Ten council brothers and twenty family members committed to the nine days of prayers for the protection of life.

Members could sign up at our parish web site. The nine day prayers and mysteries were provided, as well as Rosaries to whom ever needed them

This prayerful time was a great success and we hope to hold this live next year.

Bobbie and I are pleased to announce that the Division B winner this year is Council 15791-Falmouth

Life Supreme Winner—The Annual Walk for Life

Our annual walk for life had to be changed this year because of COVID restrictions. Our council decided to host a virtual walk! We advertised through church bulletins, signage and word of mouth to encourage participants to have a virtual walk for life.

The turn out was more than we could have anticipated. Our council had participants across three towns in our service area,  walking separately or in groups. Our council collected money both from individuals and local businesses.

The total donations amounted to $7500, which was more than double last years donations. Of the $7500 collected, $6000 will go to the Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center for their ultrasound operating expenses. $500 will go to the Ester Residence, which aids women recovering from addiction or who have been recently released from prison. $500 will go to the Courage Lives center, which aids survivors of sex trafficking. Finally, $500 will go to Vitea Society Maine to continue to distribute Pro-life messages on the internet and on TV.
Bobbie and I would like to announce that the Supreme Life winner this year is council 12941 Biddeford

Program Manager, Life-Based Initiatives

June 3, 2019 by Dan LaLonde

Dear Worthy State Deputy and State Life Director,

In the Supreme Knight’s Annual Report at the 136th Supreme Convention, he asked, “What greater legacy can a council leave than to save the life of a child?”

The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council is pleased to announce that it has entered into preferred pricing agreements with three ultrasound vendors: Neurologica, Philips, and Esaote. Given our volume of donated machines (1000+ in the past ten years), we were able to leverage our buying power to lock in guaranteed pricing for three different machines from each vendor, including a three-year maintenance contract, training, and free onboard shipping. We recommend that you select one of these vendors when you are ready to donate money for an ultrasound machine.

When working with your local pregnancy center to obtain the guaranteed pricing, please use the contact information listed on the attached document. Either the listed contact person will work with you and the pregnancy center directly, or they may connect you and the pregnancy center with a local representative. Furthermore, you can arrange a demonstration with Neurologica and Philips, or arrange to visit a nearby center that has an Esaote machine.

We recommend that the pregnancy center buys the machine directly from the vendor and that it takes title to the machine.

We hope that these preferred pricing agreements help to streamline and enhance our crucial mission of saving lives. To view an interactive map of the difference we have made, and to see the video celebrating 1,000 ultrasound machines placed since 2009, please visit For more information about the program, please visit

Life Report for Convention 2019

June 3, 2019 by Dan LaLonde

Life Report for Convention 2019

With all the gains made in the Life arena in Washington this year we should realize today that Maine government is now caught up in a strangle hold with the culture of death.  We Catholics all know that Almighty God is in charge, but I am sure He expects us to use our voting privilege to further the cause of LIFE and not to vote just because my mother & father voted for a certain party, We need to make a conscious effort to find out where the candidates stand on the most important issue!  To help me better understand why the last election turned out the way it did I looked to the words of President James Garfield when giving his centennial address to Congress in 1876 where he issued the following warning:

“Now, more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”…

His words are true for our federal government but also for our state & local government as well.  We are responsible for the character of our government because we elect these officials to represent us. Let’s take a look at the attacks on life in the first 3 months of 2019:

¨ •LD-37: An Act to allow the sale of nonprescription drugs through vending machines.  This bill is being brought forward this session.  If this bill were to pass it could allow the morning after pill to be dispensed from vending machines like potato chips.

¨ •Maine is now unleashing LD 820:  Demanding funding for elective abortions!  This bill would use Maine tax dollars to fund abortion services, as well as require that health insurance carriers provide coverage for abortion services.  Maine has never used our tax dollars to cover abortions!

¨ •Governor Janet Mill’s announcement about introducing a bill to gain access to abortion, LD 1261.  This bill would allow Nurse Practitioners to commit abortions and overturn long-standing Maine law requiring abortions to be performed by Doctors only.

¨ •And now we have LD 1313:  An Act to Enact the Maine Death with Dignity Act.

Before Catholics go into a voting booth should to know where candidates stand on the most important issue “LIFE”, and keep the words of Pope Saint John Paul II in mind.  “. . . we are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the “culture of death” and the “culture of life”. We find ourselves not only faced with but necessarily in the midst of this conflict: we are all involved, and we all share in it, with the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life.” (Evangelium Vitae).   Remember whether you’re a Democrat or Republican we need to remember if a candidate can’t make the right call on “LIFE” how can we expect them to make good judgements on other issues!

Ultrasound Initiative Update

Councils in Sanford, Springvale, Wells, Kennebunk & Biddeford held baby bottle drives & raised over $28,000 for an ultrasound unit for the ALPHA pregnancy resource center in Sanford.  Supreme matched ½ the cost of the machine which was $12,050 bringing the total raised to over $40,000.

The Open Arms Pregnancy Center in Augusta is the latest PRC in need of an ultrasound.  To date councils have raised about $2,500 but no one has used a baby bottle drive, which is the most effective way to raise money for a machine.  Councils please help Open Arms by conducting a baby bottle drive.

Life Directors update

January 3, 2019 by Dan LaLonde

“Thou shall not kill.”

This Divine command is reasonable even to the atheist.  In addition, every stable culture in the history of the world has posited it as law in some form.  As America struggles through wars, and a spiritual crisis, perhaps we need to reassess her moral compass.  January 22 marks the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion and is responsible for taking over 60 million lives to date.

What do embryologist say:

Every human embryologist worldwide states that the life of the new individual human being begins at fertilization. They never describe human life as “potential” human life.  Therefore, killing an embryo — by harvesting embryonic stem cells, by using abortifacient contraceptives, by committing so-called therapeutic cloning, or by flushing spare in-vitro fertilization embryos down the sink — takes that human life.

A year ago I spoke about Cardinal Timothy Dolan who recently wrote in the Wall Street Journal “ I’m a pastor, not a politician, and I’ve certainly had spats and disappointments with politicians from both of America’s leading parties. But it saddens me, and weakens the democracy millions of Americans cherish, when the party that once embraced Catholics now slams the door on us” He was talking about the major party that supports abortion.

Abortion should not be a partisan issue, it is a human rights issue and (where there is another candidate who supports life) no Catholic should be voting for a candidate for any office who does not oppose this horrific procedure.  It makes no sense to me when the platform of one of the major parties includes the right to an abortion.  It is discouraging to me to remember that the majority of voters that identify as Catholics in the 2008 & 2012 presidential elections voted for the most pro-abortion president in US history.

This past year pro-life candidates in our own state came under fire by pro-abortion supporters.  We should remember there were pro-life candidates running in both congressional districts in our state.  But instead of electing them Maine elected pro-abortion politicians and lost the only Pro-Life congressional seat In New England which includes 22 congressional districts.

Death with Dignity:

Last November after voting many of us were confronted with people gathering petitions one of which was Death with Dignity.  After several failed attempts with the Legislature the proponents for this disturbing immoral practice were trying to gather 60,000 signatures to try for a referendum in an attempt to get this passed into law.  Hopefully no Catholic signed this petition.

Former Pro-Life Couple for the Maine State Council

January 3, 2019 by Dan LaLonde

As a former Pro-Life Couple for the Maine State Council, my wife Debbie and I deeply support the value of life and especially the most gratifying alternative called adoption. We adopted our Son Kristopher, a 4th degree Knight; 29 years ago and there isn’t a single day that goes by when we don’t thank God for the joy he’s given our family.  I firmly believe that it affected my daughter Kelly so much, that my son-in-law Pete, who is also a Knight; and my daughter, opened their hearts to adoption even though they already had two sons (Jackson and Alex) from natural birth. Last January 2018 they adopted two twin boys (Jayce and Jeremiah) but that wasn’t enough, and on January 24th 2019 they opened their hearts one more time and adopted two precious little girls (Madison and Annabelle).  Our family has grown in the best way one can imagine, by offering love and a secure future through the gift of adoption. ~Phil Lizotte   PSD

Prayers for Adopted Children

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

John 14:16-21

Father, We are all your adopted children, not by flesh or by desire, but through the power of the Incarnation of your most beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
Bless those children who have been adopted into new families, that they may experience the love that you have shown us which surpasses even the love of a mother for her child.
In the difficult transitions and hardships that might beset them in their struggle for belonging, give every adopted child the grace to embrace their new family and trust in your paternal care for them, which lasts forever.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessed Joseph,

Christ Jesus humbly accepted you as his earthly father and was obedient to you and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In turn, you raised Jesus as your own son, protected him from harm, provided for his daily needs and loved him with all you heart.

Pray for all adopted children— infants, children, and teens.

Knights of Columbus councils in Kennebunk, Wells, Biddeford, Sanford, and Springvale teamed up to raise $40,000 for a new ultrasound at the Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center in Sanford.

December 3, 2018 by Dan LaLonde

SANFORD—An initiative that launched on Mother’s Day Weekend in May will compassionately help expecting mothers in the area for years to come.

Knights distributed empty baby bottles to parishioners who wished to help the cause. Individuals and families then filled the bottles with change, checks, or paper money, and returned them to their church.

Over $28,000 was raised. The knights then petitioned the organization’s supreme council for $12,000. The petition was approved, and an ultrasound machine will be purchased for the center to provide for the health of mothers and their unborn children.

“Our goal was to raise $20,000,” said Bob Marlowe, a member of the Knights of Columbus in Kennebunk. “This is overwhelming. The supreme council helped us to the finish line with money from the Culture of Life Fund that all knights contribute to with dues each year.”

“We know from experience that a woman who sees an ultrasound image of her child is highly likely to keep her baby,” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “A nurse practitioner told me that the first woman to use a new machine purchased in Texas said her mind was already made up in favor of abortion. But then, as she watched the ultrasound, her baby turned and seemed to wave to her. She looked up at the nurse and said, ‘I’m going to keep my baby.’”

Since 2009, similar ultrasound initiatives have allowed the Knights of Columbus to purchase over 900 ultrasound machines at a cost of approximately $44 million. The machines have been placed in pro-life pregnancy care centers in all 50 states and Canada, including several centers in Maine like First Step Pregnancy Resource Center in Bangor, ABBA in Portland, and Hope House in Lewiston.

For 25 years, Alpha in Sanford has offered a safe and confidential haven to those facing an unplanned pregnancy. The center is committed to serving all clients in a caring manner regardless of age, race, income, religion, nationality, or disability.

Life Director Update

September 2, 2018 by Dan LaLonde

Brother knights. We Need Your Help! In past years by this date, at least a dozen councils would have already sold Maine right to Life raffle tickets. As of today 8/24 we have received returns from only 4 councils. It is very important councils sell these tickets as it is the largest fundraiser Maine Right to Life has. Money from this fundraiser is used to educate young & old against the attacks on human life but, just as important it is used to educate our law makers. Whenever the legislature is in session we have representation at the State House.

Ultrasound Campaign

On Mother’s day this year 5 councils in southern Maine (Sanford, Springvale, Wells, Kennebunk and Biddeford) ran a Baby Bottle drive to raise money for an ultrasound machine for the ALPHA pregnancy resource center in Sanford. Money is still coming in but to date over $14,000.00 has been received and we have petitioned Supreme for matching funds of $12,050.00.

New Ultrasound project

We have been in touch with the director of Open Arms Pregnancy Center in Augusta and it appears they will meet the guidelines for the Ultrasound Initiative.

We are working with the Diocese of Portland to get their input and evaluation before we contact Supreme for their permission to proceed.
