Lobster Dip 2024

OLD ORCHARD BEACH (WGME)— Over 600 people ran into the ocean for the 36th annual “Lobster Dip” event in Old Orchard Beach and raised a record amount of money for Special Olympics Maine.

Six hundred thirty people lined up at Old Orchard Beach at noon on Monday, New Year’s Day, and ran straight into the ocean. Each participant had to raise at least $100 for Special Olympics Maine.

Special Olympics set a goal of $200 thousand this year and beat that goal, raising $202,725.37 with 630 participants.

“These last couple of years have been just over the top and we’re not sure why. We’ve got almost 600 registered dippers today,” said Special Olympics Maine CEO Phil Geelhoed.

Last year the “Lobster Dip” had 500 registered dippers and raised over $175 thousand.
