March State Deputy Message

March 6th marked the start of the Lenten Season.  I am reminded of the message that was given to us at Ash Wednesday Mass that correlates directly with being a Knight of Columbus: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

If we truly are “In Service to One, In Service to All” then we should be praying for everyone all the time, not just during Lent.  I know that my brother Knights and their families pray regularly.

Fasting is also a wonderful way to think about those that are less fortunate than us “all the time”.  So many of our brothers and sisters in Christ barely have enough food to eat on a daily basis; fasting is a way for us to possibly better understand their needs.

Almsgiving is more than just weekly tithing at Mass.  Like Scripture tells us:  “the left hand does not need to know what the right hand is doing” which means that even though we tithe each week, we also need to reach out to those that do not have much or hardly anything at all.  And it is not our way to tell everyone that we did that.

The Corporal Works of Mercy tells us to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned and to bury the dead.

The Spiritual Works of Mercy tells us to instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish the sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, comfort the afflicted and pray for the living and the dead.

During this Lenten Season and every season of the year, let us do more for those in distress; financially, spiritually, physically, etc.   Let us give more of ourselves by doing good works, and let us fast (to sacrifice those things that we take for granted).

As St. Francis of Assisi writes:  Preach the Gospel always, and if necessary, use words.  Vivat Jesus!
