Council: 15791 - FALMOUTH

Project Description:

Nine council brothers, and one Parish Staff member participated in the council first annual Christmas Advent Wreath Sales on Sunday December 8, 2024. A request came to the Deputy Grand Knight during November to set-up, pick up the Christmas Advent wreathes, sell the Advent wreathes and clean up after the sale at Sacred Heart Church this year. The council membership agreed to respond to this request and help with this worthy cause. Seventy wreathes were purchased, and sixty of the seventy were sold. ten were donated. Next year smaller size Advent wreaths will be purchased, because the larger one’s didn’t move so well. All in all the council brothers who volunteered to work the shifts were very pleased with the number of Advent wreaths they sold. Some of the clergy stopped in to see how the knights were doing and were pleased to see the customers purchasing the Christmas Advent wreath’s. Thanks be to God it was a nice day, but on the cold side.

Council: 15791 - FALMOUTH

Project Description:

One of our council brothers attended a Christmas Potluck lunch at Saint Hyacinth’s Hall in Westbrook on Sunday December 8, 2024. Also present were three Knights in attendance from the Windham council. Once a year our Sowers of the Word Order gathers with their family members, to help celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus. It’s always an enjoyable time to share special times with one another, singing Christmas Carols, and enjoy the food and delicious dessert which the members supplied. We thank our Lord for allowing us to gather and share this special time with one another once again this year. Thanks be to our Lord.

Nativity Displays

12/08/2024

Council: 2344 - So. PORTLAND

Project Description:

Our Council purchased and set up Nativity scenes outside two of the churches in our Parish as a portion of our Keep Christ in Christmas project. This is a fairly large but simple manger with white silhouettes of Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, and sheep. We erected this adjacent to a well-traveled road for maximum visibility to the public. It was illuminated by spotlights from dusk to dawn. We also placed a very large “Keep Christ in Christmas” banner on the road in front of St. Max church.

An Early Christmas Meal for the Residents of this Senior Complex.

12/07/2024

Council: 15791 - FALMOUTH

Project Description:

One of our council brothers helped set-up and serve an Early Christmas Meal for the Residents of this Senior Complex in Gray on Thursday December 5, 2024. This Christmas meal was the ninth annual, which was enjoyed by most of the residents here. Our council brother brought meals to three of the shut-ins, two of them being Veterans. As in the years pass it was nice to be able to serve and help those seniors and veterans during the Christmas holiday season. It’s always nice for us to get together and enjoy a great meal and one another’s company. Following the meal a couple of the seniors hung some Christmas lights in the community. Reaching out and helping those seniors in need is what we as Knights of Columbus are all about.

First Communion/Confirmation Breakfast

12/07/2024

Council: 11376 - BRIDGTON-FRYEBURG

Project Description:

On 11/30/24, members of the Parishes of Western Maine Lakes and Foothills teamed up with Knights of Columbus to participate in parade that began in Norway and ended in South Paris. Four Knights participated in this 2.2 mile parade; unofficially the largest parade in Maine. While the knights carried the “Keep Christ in Christmas banner”, Parish members created a float with the theme ‘St. Nicholas of Myra” and drove the float for the entire parade. The Bridgton/Fryeburg knights began the parade about 1/2 mile from the start line (to give an idea of how large this parade was) and then walked the 2.2 mile route. A very large crowd looked on with the Parish running out of candy to give-away before the halfway mark!

First Communion/Confirmation Breakfast (corrected write up)

12/07/2024

Council: 11376 - BRIDGTON-FRYEBURG

Project Description:

On October 20, the Knights of Columbus council 11376 had the privilege of serving breakfast to 21 children (and their families) who just received their first communion/confirmation. Also in attendance were Bishop Ruggieri and Father Ed Clifford. Breakfast was cooked at the parish Hall and included scrambled eggs, home fries, and sausage. The kids had a wide selection of baked breakfast goodies (including a couple gluten free items), fresh fruit, and yogurt. Each family had their own table which was beautifully set up to match the formal attire of the kids and family: table cloth, their names, beautiful center pieces, a plate of homemade breakfast bars, orange juice, and silverware. After Bishop Ruggieri led the group in saying grace, people lined up and was personally served breakfast by 5 members of the Knights. I was a server and can confirm a number of people came back for seconds; and the kids enjoyed picking their favorite breakfast goodie. After breakfast, Father Ed gave a heartwarming speech congratulating each of the 21 children and their families (nobody can recall the last time we had over 20 children receiving first communion/confirmation). A beautiful cake was made for the event and gobbled up by kids and adults alike. Father Ed then presented each of the 21 with a gift provided by the Knights of Columbus. Most, if not all, the parents thanked Father Ed for making the event so special.

Basilica Tours

12/06/2024

Council: 13181 - SABATTUS

Project Description:

In 2024, the Prince of Peace Parish continued its tours of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston. This was something that had been done in years past, but had stopped during the pandemic. This event coincides with the annual Balloon Festival in Lewiston on August 17 – 18, 2024. In order to increase participation, shuttle buses ran between the Balloon Festival and the Basilica. The Knights of Columbus volunteered in a number of ways throughout the event. From our Council, Nicolas Michaud volunteered at the Balloon Festival to promote the tours and to help people on and off the shuttle buses and Robert Michaud guided participants through the tour and down to the hall for refreshments.

Chicken BBQ

12/06/2024

Council: 13181 - SABATTUS

Project Description:

The Bishop Edward C. O’Leary Council #13181 annually hosts a Chicken BBQ each summer. This year we hosted the event on August 25th at the Maxwell-Gill Hall next to Our Lady of the Rosary in Sabattus. We offered both dine-in and take-out service.

The Chicken BBQ involves the efforts of several Brother Knights and their wives to prepare the side dishes on the day before the event, and then to cook and serve the food on the day of the event. In order to make it a little different than years past, we pushed the date back to late August to hopefully catch families that have finished their summer activities and are getting ready to send their children back to school. Another benefit to the later date was the ability to take advantage of the availability of local corn-on-the-cob, something we couldn’t offer in July. On Saturday, August 26th, Knights including myself, Robert Michaud, Mike Bolduc, Dan Bouffard, Jim Daigle, Don Champagne, Nicolas Michaud, Xavier Michaud, James Ingalls and our wives gathered to peel potatoes, prepare side salads, set up the BBQ pit and tent (cooking outside requires that the cook area is covered), and set up the tables in the Maxwell-Gill Hall. Sunday morning, the same crew returned to cook the chicken (including our own home-made BBQ sauce), the corn-on-the-cob, and then serve the meals and clean up afterward.

Our Chicken BBQ features meals that include a ½ chicken, pasta salad, potato salad, corn, bread, beverages and dessert. We served approximately 100 meals and the feedback from the event was excellent. This event contributed approximately $300 to our church and scholarship funds. The decision to make this a special event paid off and the community really seemed to enjoy it.
