Council: 114 - BANGOR

Project Description:

Father Frank Murray, Pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish contacted the Grand Knight Keith Forbes to see if the Knights could paint the basement hallway of one of the two Catholic Schools, St. John’s School. Fr. Murray, Keith and the maintenance person of the school, a Mr. Ron Gagnon met that same day and viewed the hallway and got the instructions on what needed to be painted and by when.

The following day, August 7th, the Knights met for their Monthly Business Meeting, under New Business a motion was made that the Knights take on Painting of the Hallway, the motion was seconded and voted on, it passed.

The Parish property manager Mr. Bob Levasseur shopped for the supplies needed to paint the hallway doors and walls, items such as: drop cloths, wipe clothes, tape, paint, rolls, brushes and the paints.

On August 13th at 8AM, six brother Knights arrived at the school to begin the painting project. Brother Jeff Schaller our Warden was project manager, he explained to the crew what the objective was for the day. Basically we had to cover all areas that we didn’t want to paint, tape and cover all the floors (the floors had already been painted) then all of us began scrapping the brick painted hallways. The scrapping lasted well into the afternoon, after we completed the scrapping we had to clean-up the mess. The crew stopped at 4 PM for dinner, then returned at 6 PM to begin painting the nine doors within the hallway, classroom doors. Each of the doors received two coats of paint. In addition, one Knight and his son began painting walls. At the end of the evening a discussion was had about the possibility of a sprayer being used to paint the walls, since they were brick and porous, it was decided that the sprayer might just be the answer to covering the walls bette with paint.

On August 14th, again at 8 AM, five brothers and one professional sprayer person arrived and got busy. About mid morning it was decided that the sprayer was working very efficient and that the rest of the crew could leave, one because the paint sprayer placed a heavy amount of paint spray in the air making it unhealthy to breath and to allow the spray painter freedom of movement to do the entire length of the hallway on both sides. This worked out remarkably well, the hallway came out fantastic. During the evening the doors were touched up, the wall, floor coverings were picked up, the floors swept and the place put back the way it was found, bulletin boards put back, lockers etc.

On August 15th, Jeff Schaller, Keith FOrbes and Bill Bennett arrived to the school to do the last touch ups, and to insure we left the area clean and ready for the students arrival in a few days. All in all this project was completed professionally, better than anticipated, and what a clean neat appearance the hallway had. Great project for the Knights to help with. The new school principle and Fr. Murray were so very pleased.
