Augusta Food Bank

Council: 334 - AUGUSTA

Project Description:

I am a volunteer at the Augusta Food Bank. I drive the food bank’s van to various stores on a weekly basis. I have a crew of younger persons who are all volunteers. We load the van with thousands of pounds of donated food stuffs and other items from a variety of stores. We also unload and help disburse the pick ups throughout the facility. I, along with another volunteer, have also picked up extremely large orders of purchased items from a local supermarket on behalf of the food bank. Another place that I have made large pick ups is the Department of Agriculture.
I have taken on the additional chore of recording the weights of our pick ups. It is not uncommon to pick up close to 5,000 to 6,000 lbs of meat, produce, dairy and bakery items at one stop alone. Other stores will contribute anywhere from 1,200 lbs. to 500, 600, 700, 800 or 900 lbs. The amounts vary from day to day. We also have picked up household, clothing, hygiene, paper goods, cleaners and other non food items. These items are mostly delivered by us to Bridging The Gap, which our council financially supports, and which offers a variety of support to our community.
The work performed by us and other volunteers is labor intensive. The hours recorded are mine only as I do not know the hours produced by the other K of C member. They also reflect the March time limit for the surge report though this is a year long continuous activity. This pandemic year has seen a big surge in demand for these services. As a Knight I am proud to be on the “Front Line” with my other fellow Knight in helping to feed people during our community’s time of need.
