BEACH SUMMER OLYMPICS
BEACH SUMMER OLYMPICS
Council: 13861 - SANFORD
Project Description:
ST. THOMAS COUNCIL VOLUNTEERED 5 KNIGHTS TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS. UNLIKE PAST YEARS, THE BULK OF THE FUNDRAISING FELL UPON THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. MEMBERS VOLUNTEERED THEIR SERVICES ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. THEY STOOD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAIN THOROUGHFARES IN OLD ORCHARD BEACH, HOLDING THE SKINS OF BASKETBALLS TO ACCEPT DONATIONS FROM THE DRIVERS OF MANY VEHICLES FROM MANY STATES WHO WERE VISITING THE BEACH IN AUGUST. MANY DRIVERS STOPPED TO MAKE THEIR DONATIONS AND THANK US FOR OUR SERVICE. NOT ONLY WAS THE WEATHER PERFECT, BUT THE SIGHTS OF PASSER-BYERS WAS MEMORABLE. ALTHOUGH WE DID NOT GET A TALLY FOR OUR EFFORTS THAT WEEKEND, MAINE SPECIAL OLYMPICS REPRESENTATIVES WERE MOST GRATEFUL FOR OUR SUPPORT. THE FUNDS WOULD BE USED TO SPONSOR SPECIAL OLYMPIANS AT VARIOUS COMPETITIONS LOCALLY AS WELL AS IN NEW ENGLAND.
