Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest
Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest
Council: 10019 - LEWISTON
Project Description:
The 2022-23 Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest was held at Saint Dominic’s Academy in Auburn, Maine this past fall. Forty one eighth grade students participated in this year’s contest. The topic was very challenging and the students did an excellent job on their essays. The topic, “Explain how young Catholics can evangelize our faith to families and friends who have turned away from religion and encourage them to return to the Church and embrace the sacraments” brought about many different ideas from the students.
We had six judges who scored each essay in three categories: Content-35 points, Grammar- 30 points and Style- 35 points making a possible total of 100 points.
After all the scores were tallied, a first place winner was chosen. Madelynne Stratman scored a 99 average. Two other young ladies both scored 97’s.
On November 28, 2022, St. Dom’s held their weekly school mass at 9:20 am and after mass, three brother knights did a presentation of awards to the top three essay winners. Two girls tied for second place and each received a certificate and $50. The first place winner received a certificate, $75 and an invitation for her and her family to come to our Light Up For Christ program and the winner was our honorary person to flip the switch and light up the creche at 8pm along with the many thousands of knights all over the world doing the same thing a 8pm their local time. The Stratman family was very elated for the honor. We look forward to continue this tradition in years to come. Vivat Jesus!
