Meals to those in need
Meals to those in need
Council: 114 - BANGOR
Project Description:
Brother Sir Knight EJ Hikel with help from Phil Bergin has coordinated the food for families program since 2018. Participating knights include Grand Knight Peter Starr, Trustee Keith Forbes, Andre Fecteau, Rey Dubois, Mark Armstrong, John Newcomb, Al McAvoy, Arrin Farrar, Glen Gaspar, Brett Baber, and Trustee James Landers. Even our the widow of Sir Knight Norm Pacholski, Coco has been helping. We served over 50 meals in the past year, including meals for Sir Knight Ed Beaulieau when his wife Trudy past away, but mostly to Sir Brother Knight Don and his wife Dela Factor. Don had had a terrible accident and was left blind and wheelchair bound. The knights coordinate visits via “Take them a meal” web site and deliver the food and stay and visit Don and Dela. Dela, was diagnosed with lung cancer in Spring of 2020 and so the need for support became even greater. There was a noticeable decline in Dela’s health in the Fall so Brother EJ proposed more meals per week and took it upon himself with the other supporting Knights to roster in three or four meals a week. Don and Dela’s daughter came from out of state to help her mom and dad but was also working from home. This was a great help to the family but also it meant that there was a need to make sure the daughter was also supported through regular meals being provided. Sadly, Dela passed away earlier this year (2021) and the ministry is now even more important as Sir Knight Don, his daughter and the rest of the family struggle with the loss of Dela while also working out what will be a possible way forward to care for Don . Dela was always so grateful for the Knights support and consequently the family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in Dela’s name be made to the Pine Cone Council and their work for the protection of the Unborn. Don and the family are very grateful for the meals and company. The meals help provide less of a burden of the Factor family as they are challenged through the ongoing needs for Don and especially now that Dela, Don’s ‘champion’ has gone to her eternal reward.’ It has continued to be a great family ministry for our council. We use the “takethemameal.com” website to have knights sign up. They then coordinate delivery of the meal which often includes a socially distant visit and prayer time.
