River Driver Memorial Project
River Driver Memorial Project
Council: 680 - MILLINOCKET
Project Description:
The River Driver Memorial is an ongoing project to maintain, preserve, and upgrade the final resting place of two men who perished in the early days of using the river to bring logs to the sawmills. This memorial, on the Rice Farm Road in Millinocket, had fallen in disrepair because of neglect until 2013 when the Knights of Council 680 decided to assume responsibility to upgrade and preserve this memorial. In the last 5 years, members, cut trees, branches, and other debris to clear the site, killed weeds and planted ground cover to enhance the site, placed a memorial stone with the names of the two loggers who were laid to rest there, and repaired and upgraded the crosses that were placed there many years ago. On June 9th, we added another upgrade to this memorial by continuing to dig and place several additional yards of stone dust to extend a walking path from the parking area, around the memorial and back to the parking area. Several hours were spent digging up sod, cutting roots, grading and leveling the walking path before placing the stone dust to create a smooth, level walking area that hopefully, with the addition and tamping of several more yards of stone dust will create a hard enough path to become handicap accessible. We hope to continue providing upgrades to the site with the intention of making this a must see for the citizens of Millinocket and its many visitors for many years to come.
