Spaghetti Supper for Oncology Clinic Renovation Project (Helping Hands)

Project Description:

When Millinocket Regional Hospital requested community assistance to realize the extensive renovation project to their oncology clinic, Council 680 sprung into action. The hospital had received a substantial grant for its project, but the grant stipulated that the hospital had to raise half the required funds to be eligible for the grant that would make the project a reality. Wanting to do its part, Council 680 planned, organized, and hosted a spaghetti public supper at St. Martin’s Parish Hall. To maximize the donation made to the clinic project, Council 680 also decided to donate all the supply costs so every penny earned would be donated to the hospital. There was no charge set for admission to the supper, so diners were free to donate whatever they wished in the hope that many would donate more than the usual cost of a similar public dinner. The night before, several Knights met at the hall to prepare the salads, and chop the ingredients needed for the sauces. The tables were set up and properly papered in preparation for the diners the following evening. In the morning, Knights returned to the kitchen to place the sauces in slow roasters to cook all day. An hour before the event, Knights cooked the spaghetti, grilled the garlic bread, tossed the salads and set out the desserts that had been donated by the wives of Brother Knights. During the event several Knights served the meals, cleaned the tables, emptied the trash and cleaned the dishes. In all, 210 meals were served and 480 dollars was raised. Many donations of 50-100 dollars were received by the generous diners. A formal presentation was made to Millinocket Regional hospital the following week. Council 680 was proud of being one of several community service organizations who helped Millinocket Regional Hospital meet its goal to expand and upgrade this valuable service to the community it serves.
