St Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen Volunteer Work
St Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen Volunteer Work
Council: 101 - PORTLAND
Project Description:
The St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen provides a sit down meal, take home lunch, food pantry, clothing and other various sundries to the homeless, unemployed, underemployed, refugees and other needy people in the greater Portland area. Five members of our council worked at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen in Portland during the past year. Due to the pandemic we did not provide a sit down meal from January through early June. After that we provided all of our services. The soup kitchen fed anywhere from 50 to 150 people daily, Monday through Friday. Our five members along with about 125 other volunteers worked at the soup kitchen during 2022 performing a host of duties. Duties included preparing and serving food plus clean up, picking up food donations from area supermarkets, the Wayside Food Program, area churches and other donors, buying needed supplies that are not donated, sorting through and marking clothing and various sundries, putting lunches together, sorting out food items and displaying them on tables for our clients to pick through, cleaning the kitchen and premises as needed, and various other activities that make the soup kitchen operate as well as it does. Three of our members were also very involved with these duties as well as serving on the board of directors… including president, acting president and vice president.
