Supper/Coats for Kids
Supper/Coats for Kids
Council: 10019 - LEWISTON
Project Description:
On September 3rd, our council sponsored a spaghetti & meatball supper, dinner rolls, salad, cake and beverages, in order to raise the required funds to purchase warm winter coats for local under privileged kids and youths. This well advertised project drew people from all over the community to help out. Over a dozen council volunteers and spouses, worked as a well-oiled machine to make and serve one hundred fifty-five servings to loyal customers. With all expenses covered we had a net profit of over $2500. This is one of the best fund-raising efforts that we have had in several years.
The council donated one hundred twenty new coats, some of which were donated by grateful parishioners. Also, a challenge well met by three dedicated ladies volunteered their time and expertise to knit hats and mittens, to be given with the coats.
The Dominican Sisters at their Sabattus, Loaves and Fishes organization located deserving recipients in need. One of their representatives agreed to locate families, contacted them to schedule time and date of pick-up which was on November 3rd. What a delight to see these poor kids select a coat, hat, mittens of their choosing. Many of them no doubt the first new clothes they ever received; their happy smiles were our reward. Yes, there was enough for all, with leftovers for another day.
Our members also donated the portion of the coats leftover to local schools, both in Lewiston and Auburn. The St. Dom’s Key Club adopts families for the holidays, so this year they will have an ample supply of warm coats to help their families in need.
Praise be to God for this giving community.
