Variety Show
Council: 2219 - WESTBROOK
Project Description:
The annual St. Hyacinth Variety Show sponsored by the Westbrook Knights of Columbus returned on Saturday, April 27, after a four-year hiatus caused by the COVID pandemic.
Proceeds from the annual variety show have traditionally gone to a worthy charitable cause. With approval of Council 2219, the decision was made to donate the entire proceeds from the 2024 show to the Wounded Warrior Project, which offers a wide range of services to assist veterans, especially those suffering a physical or mental injury, and their families. Any expenses would come from the council rather than the proceeds, and the council further decided to match all donations exclusive of ticket and table sales. The result was a donation of $2,885.
The program began with the Vintage Voices, an ensemble of singers, performing several Neil Sedaka songs, from “Laughter in the Rain” to “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” Phil LeClerc performed some Dean Martin songs, Steve Gagnon brilliantly portrayed Maurice Chevalier, and Bruce LeBeau entertained the audience with a John Denver medley. Louis Philippe presented a medley of Christian hymns, concluding with a parish favorite, “O Happy Day.” A real highlight of the first half was the musical performance of Jude Lavertu, the youngest performer of the night. Jude also assisted Louis with introductions, and later in the show he was serenaded with a new version of the Beatles’ “Hey Jude.” The second half included an Irish sing-along led by Paul Concannon, a poetry reading by Ed Rielly, Kathleen March’s expressive, spiritual dance, a musical performance by Lori Arsenault, an extraordinarily entertaining dance by several ladies calling themselves the Brookettes (which really brought down the house), and a guest appearance by musical legends Don and Cindy Roy.
