Youth Sports Coaching and Volunteering
Council: 13181 - SABATTUS
Project Description:
The Brother Knights of Council #13181 in Sabattus have been very active in the coaching of youth sports in our communities.
I, Robert Michaud, am the head hockey coach for the Maranacook Area Youth Hockey Bantam team. At Maranacook Area Youth Hockey, we stress player development, team work, and sportsmanship as much as or more that the fundamentals of the game of hockey. We hold practices twice each week and each team usually has 1 to 2 games each weekend. The work that the players do helps them to develop, not just as hockey players, but character as well. We recognize and reward their hard work and correct them when they fall short. Our teams have been very successful over the years and the success is due in large part to the overall individual development that we stress.
Hockey, like all team sports, offers an opportunity for young players to learn key values and then put them to the test in competition. I am proud to see the development and growth of these young men and women and know that they will carry what they have learned on the ice with them through life.
I, Robert Michaud, am a lacrosse coach for the Sabattus Rec. Club 7th & 8th team. Together with 3 other coaches we led our team of young lacrosse players through their lacrosse season. This typically included 2 practices per week and 1 to 2 games our tournaments each weekend. We focused on the development of lacrosse skills, but more importantly, the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork and hard work to accomplish a goal. We were were privileged to observe very positive growth throughout the season of all of our players.
Brother Knight Robert Gladu is an assistant coach for the Maine Gladiators hockey club and the Poland / Gray / New Gloucester / Leavitt combined High School Hockey team. He coaches both younger and older players in a positive developmental appropriate way to help them become successful in their chosen sport.
Brother Knight Justin Castonguay has become the scheduler for the Maranacook Youth Hockey Association. This position requires a significant time commitment, especially at the beginning of the hockey season to make sure a fun and effective program is delivered.
